What safety precautions should be taken when using a portable rebar cutter?

When using a portable steel cutter, safe operation is the primary principle. Strict management shall be carried out from five aspects of equipment inspection, operation norms, environmental protection, personal protection and emergency disposal. Specific caveats are as follows:

 

I. Inspection of equipment prior to operation
Inspection of appearance and structure
Make sure there are no cracks or deformations in the casing of the equipment and that the cutting head/blade is securely installed and not loose or worn.
Check that the power cord (electric type) or hydraulic pipeline (hydraulic type) is in good condition and not damaged, aged or leaking.
Ensure that switches and emergency stop buttons function properly and that rotating parts (such as cutting heads) are not jammed.
Power and Power Safety
For electric types, use a power supply with a matching voltage to avoid overload or short circuit, and for rechargeable equipment, make sure the battery is fully charged to avoid switching off duringoperation.
For hydraulic type, check that the quantity of hydraulic oil is sufficient and that the oil pipe is tightly connected to prevent leakage.
Environmental Adaptability Inspection
Make sure there are no flammable or explosive items in the work area and avoid wet, hot or corrosive conditions (unless the equipment is clearly supported).
Check that the floor is level to prevent equipment from tipping or sliding.

 

II. Safety Norms during operation
Personal protective equipment
Must wear: hard hat, cut gloves, goggles (to prevent splashes), fall shoes.
Recommended for: Earplugs (noise environment), dust masks (dust environment), reflective vest (outdoor work).
Correct Operating Postures
Keep your balance and keep your feet shoulder-width apart to avoid one-handed handling or pushing too hard.
When cutting, hold the device tightly with both hands to ensure that the cutting head is perpendicular to the steel rod and that lateral force is not applied to prevent blade from breaking or the device from losing control.
Avoid risky behaviour
It is forbidden: to place a finger or any part of the body near the cutting head; to adjust the position of equipment or steel bars during cutting; and to use equipment to cut unspecified materials (such as carbide, stone).
Note: When cutting thick steel bars, the process should be carried out in stages to avoid one too many forces, causing damage or rebound of equipment.
Environmental safety controls
Make sure people are not near the work area and set up warning signs or barriers.
When cutting, stay away from flammable materials to prevent sparks from igniting. In enclosed spaces, ventilation should be enhanced.

III. Post-operation maintenance and storage
Equipment shutdown and power disconnection
Once the operation is complete, close the power supply or hydraulic system, unplug the power plug (electric type) or release the hydraulic pressure (hydraulic type).
Wait until the device has completely shut down before you proceed. Cleaning and Maintenance
Remove any debris and dust from the cutting head to prevent any interference with future use.
Check for blade wear, replace or grind in time (follow instructions).
For hydraulic models, the hydraulic oil should be replaced periodically; for electric models, the charging ports should be cleaned.
Safe storage
Place the equipment in a dry, well-ventilated special tool cabinet to avoid direct sunlight or rain.
Cutting heads/blades should be stored separately to prevent damage or accidental activation on impact with a hard object.

 

IV. INTRODUCTION Extra attention in Special Scenarios
Work at high altitude
Safety rope fixtures must be used and operators must wear safety belts.
Avoid working on high winds or unstable platforms to prevent equipment from falling.
Underwater or Wet Environments
Make sure the equipment is water resistant (e.g. IP67). Avoid water ingress, short circuit or hydraulic system failures.
At the end of operation, dry the equipment thoroughly to prevent internal corrosion. Emergency management
If the blade is blocked or equipment malfunction, press the emergency stop button immediately to cut off the power supply. Don't try to force it.
If a fire is caused by sparks or dust, use a dry powder extinguisher to extinguish the fire, not water.
